Following the historic arrival of over 6.6 billion devotees at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, preparations are underway to welcome the rare Indian skimmer chicks on the sands of the Ganga.
Over 150 pairs of these endangered birds arrived in the region, typically laying eggs from December to March.
To protect their nests and newborn chicks, the Yogi government has deployed numerous watchers and placed the wildlife team on high alert.
The Indian skimmers hide their eggs in the sand, making them vulnerable to wild animals and other threats.
To protect them, authorities have initiated large-scale surveillance efforts, including continuous patrolling by the wildlife team and deploying watchers around the nests.
These measures ensure the safety of the eggs and young skimmers from any harm.
In addition to the Indian skimmers, over 90 species of both native and foreign birds had arrived at the Maha Kumbh.
These birds play a vital role in pollution control and contribute to the region’s ecological balance.
The influx of such a diverse range of birds has also attracted bird enthusiasts and nature lovers from around the world.
In line with the vision of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, a special plan has been prepared to promote eco-tourism during the Maha Kumbh.
This initiative not only aims at environmental conservation but also focuses on generating employment opportunities for local communities.
The presence of a variety of bird species, including the Indian skimmer, presents an opportunity to further boost the region’s eco-tourism potential.
The eco-tourism plan includes creating awareness among visitors about the importance of bird conservation and the role of the local ecosystem.
As part of the strategy, the government will employ local communities in various roles, such as guiding visitors and managing wildlife conservation efforts.
This initiative aligns with the government’s focus on sustainable development and employment generation in rural areas.
The presence of Indian skimmers in the Sangam region has drawn attention to the area’s ecological significance.
These birds contribute to the local biodiversity and play a role in maintaining the delicate balance of the ecosystem, which also aids in pollution control.
Their arrival highlights the importance of preserving such species in their natural habitats.
As the Maha Kumbh continues to attract millions of devotees and visitors, it also serves as a platform for showcasing the efforts being made in wildlife conservation.
The Yogi government’s initiative to protect the Indian skimmers and other bird species is a crucial step towards ensuring that nature and religious practices can coexist harmoniously.
