Women’s Enrollment In Indian Universities Increases By 26% In 2024

India has seen an encouraging rise in the number of women enrolling in higher education, with a 26% increase in women’s enrolment in 2024.

This surge contrasts with a more modest 3.6% growth in men’s enrolment, as highlighted in a recent report by TeamLease Edtech.

The overall student enrolment in universities has increased by about 12% compared to the previous year, indicating a positive trend in the country’s higher education sector.

In addition to university enrolment, women’s participation in work-linked and work-integrated programs has seen a remarkable increase of over 124%, a sign of their growing presence in industry-aligned education pathways.

These programs aim to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical industry experience, providing students with the skills necessary to succeed in the workforce.

Men’s enrolment in these programs also grew, although at a lower rate of approximately 66%.

A Shift Towards A More Equitable Workforce

According to Shantanu Rooj, the Founder and CEO of TeamLease Edtech, this shift in enrolment patterns lays the groundwork for a more equitable workforce in the future.

He emphasized that the increasing number of female applicants in both university and work-integrated programs is a testament to the evolving aspirations of women in India.

Rooj stressed the need to look beyond just higher education and continue to invest in accessible, industry-aligned education pathways to ensure that women thrive in the workplaces of tomorrow.

The rising enrolment of women in higher education in India is a positive indicator of progress towards gender equality in the academic and professional realms.

This growth not only contributes to the empowerment of women but also prepares them to play an essential role in the future workforce, which will be critical for India’s economic growth and development.

As more women enter the educational sphere, it is expected that their presence will further reshape industries, contributing to a more inclusive and diverse workforce.

The Need for Continued Investment

As women’s enrolment numbers continue to rise, it is crucial to maintain investment in accessible education and support systems to ensure that women can successfully transition from education to career.

India’s growing focus on gender parity in education will have lasting effects on its economy and society, laying a solid foundation for future generations.
