West Bengal heads to the polls on Thursday in the first phase of a high-stakes, tightly monitored Assembly election, with nearly 3.6 crore voters expected to cast their ballots across around 44,000 polling booths in 152 constituencies spanning 16 districts.
The election will take place in two phases, a significant reduction from eight in 2021 and six in 2016.
Despite fewer phases, authorities have deployed an unprecedented number of central security forces, alongside new Election Commission measures aimed at strict enforcement of poll regulations.
This phase will likely see a close contest in at least 80 seats. The ruling Trinamool Congress will face the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
In several constituencies, multi-cornered fights are likely following the split between the Left Front and Congress, along with the participation of religion-based organisations.
The Trinamool Congress faces the challenge of retaining its 2021 dominance. These efforts will be particularly crucial in rural and minority-dominated regions that are key to its majority prospects.
The BJP, on the other hand, is aiming to consolidate its position in North Bengal, border districts, and key urban centres to reinforce a two-front contest narrative.
The Election Commission has deployed about 2,407 CAPF companies, involving over 2.4 lakh personnel, marking an unprecedented security presence.
Quick Reaction Teams remain stationed, and 7,384 booths remain classified as super-sensitive or critical.
Voter turnout trends in minority and tea-garden regions will likely serve as key indicators of the election process. The functioning of complaint mechanisms will also act as an important measure.
The Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls remains a contentious issue. Around 91 lakh names have been removed while adding new voters and updating records.
Many deletions involve deceased, shifted, or duplicate voters. The introduction of ‘logical discrepancy’ criteria using artificial intelligence has, however, sparked political debate.
Judicial authorities are reviewing appeals, with a limited number of names cleared so far for inclusion.
