PIB Fact Check Warns Of SBI Rewards Scam Using Malicious APK Files

The PIB Fact Check unit has issued a warning against a circulating scam that lures users into downloading malicious APK files in the name of redeeming State Bank of India (SBI) rewards.

The alert follows a rise in fraudulent messages shared via SMS and WhatsApp.

According to PIB Fact Check, users may receive messages prompting them to download and install an APK file to claim supposed SBI reward benefits.

The agency has, however, cautioned that such messages are fraudulent and designed to compromise users’ personal and financial information.

Highlighting the nature of the scam, PIB Fact Check stated that the State Bank of India does not send links or APK files through SMS or WhatsApp for rewards redemption. Any such communication claiming to be from SBI should be treated as suspicious.

Cyber fraudsters often use these tactics to trick users into installing malicious software, which can lead to data theft, unauthorised access to banking details, and financial loss.

The advisory reinforces that downloading unknown files poses a serious security risk.

PIB Fact Check has, however, urged the public to avoid clicking on unknown links or downloading files from unverified sources.

Users should rely only on official banking channels and websites for information about rewards or account services.

The warning is part of ongoing efforts to counter misinformation and prevent cyber fraud.

Authorities continue to encourage digital awareness and caution as scams become increasingly sophisticated.
