West Bengal Orthopedic Association Expels Sandip Ghosh Following Arrest

The West Bengal Orthopedic Association (WBOA) has expelled Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, from its membership.

This decision follows Ghosh’s arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday evening, in connection with a high-profile financial irregularities case.

On 18 August, the WBOA announced that it would bar Ghosh from participating in any academic activities under its banner.

However, the recent developments led the association to terminate his membership outright.

The state unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) had also requested the central governing council to expel Ghosh, reinforcing the decision made by WBOA.

On 28 August, the IMA had suspended Ghosh’s membership, citing the ‘disrepute’ he brought to the profession.

The suspension notice detailed concerns about Ghosh’s conduct, including several complaints regarding financial mismanagement during his tenure at RG Kar.

The allegations against Ghosh include awarding contracts without proper approval from the state health department and the college council, using private entities for infrastructure tasks instead of the state public works department (PWD), and allegedly selling biomedical waste, including organs from unidentified bodies, outside the hospital.

Ghosh, along with three others arrested in connection with the case Afsar Ali, Suman Hazra, and Biplab Sinha will appear before a special court in Kolkata today.

Ali, Ghosh’s personal bodyguard, and Sinha and Hazra, vendors of medical equipment to the hospital during Ghosh’s tenure, face charges linked to the alleged irregularities.

The legal proceedings are closely watched as the case continues to unfold, with significant implications for the involved parties and the broader medical community.
