West Bengal Governor’s Defamation Suit Faces Second Adjournment, Next Hearing Set For 10 July

The defamation suit filed by West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee saw another adjournment on Thursday, with the Calcutta High Court fixing 10 July as the next date of hearing.

This marks the second adjournment in the case.

Justice Krishna Rao’s single-judge Bench initially scheduled the hearing for Wednesday but adjourned it to Thursday.

Justice Rao instructed including media houses, whose reports Governor Bose’s suit is based on, as parties in the case.

During Thursday’s proceedings, Governor Bose’s counsel, Dhiraji Trivedi, highlighted that the hearing had not officially listed in the court records yet.

Following this, Justice Rao adjourned the proceedings, setting July 10 as the new hearing date.

The defamation suit includes not only Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee but also Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh, along with newly-elected party legislators Sayantika Banerjee and Reyat Sarkar.

Sources from Raj Bhavan indicated that Ghosh’s inclusion was due to comments he made about the Governor to a specific media outlet.

Similarly, the inclusion of the two legislators was based on their remarks to the media regarding their swearing-in ceremony.

The suit stems from remarks made by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding confusion over the oath-taking ceremony of the two legislators, where she supported their decision not to attend the ceremony at Raj Bhavan.

Her comments included concerns about the safety of women at Raj Bhavan, stating, “Why will the two newly-elected MLAs go to the Raj Bhavan? As it is, after what has happened at Raj Bhavan, women are scared to go there. I have received complaints.”
