The West Bengal Legislative Assembly was officially dissolved on Thursday after the completion of its constitutional tenure, marking the formal conclusion of the Mamata Banerjee government’s term in office.
Governor RN Ravi issued the dissolution order under Article 174(2)(b) of the Constitution of India. The notification stated that the Assembly stood dissolved with effect from May 7, 2026.
The development followed days of political uncertainty after the Assembly election results delivered a sweeping mandate in favour of the BJP.
Reports indicated that the BJP crossed the majority mark comfortably, ending the Trinamool Congress government’s fifteen-year rule in the state.
Earlier, Mamata Banerjee had declined to resign as Chief Minister and questioned the fairness of the electoral process. She alleged irregularities during the counting and announced that her party would challenge the results legally.
Constitutional experts observed that the expiry of the Assembly’s tenure automatically brought the government’s term to an end.
The Governor’s notification formally completed the constitutional transition process.
The political shift represents a major transformation in West Bengal’s electoral landscape.
BJP secured a decisive breakthrough in the state and was prepared to form its first government in Bengal after Independence.
Political activity, however, intensified across Kolkata as parties prepared for the next phase of government formation.
The dissolution also cleared the path for constitutional procedures related to inviting the majority party to establish the new administration in the state.
