According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), a voter turnout of 33.31% was recorded until 1 pm on Wednesday in the single-phase Delhi Assembly elections. The North-East district emerged as the leader with the highest voter turnout of 39.51%, marking a significant participation from voters in the area.
In contrast, the lowest turnout of 29.74% was reported in the Central district of Delhi. Other districts recorded the following voter turnouts by 1 pm:
Meanwhile, the Milkipur assembly constituency in Uttar Pradesh recorded a voter turnout of 44.59% in the by-assembly elections, while Tamil Nadu’s Erode (East) constituency saw 42.41% voter turnout as of 11 am during the bypolls.

Polling for 70 Delhi Assembly seats and bypolls for two other constituencies commenced at 7 am on Wednesday, with tight security in place at polling stations across the regions.
As polling proceeded, AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj raised concerns over police interference at a polling station in Chirag Delhi. Bharadwaj allege that Delhi Police attempting to prevent people from casting their votes, claiming that barricades put up to influence elections in 17-18 polling booths. However, South Delhi DCP Ankit Chauhan assured that the police would investigate the issue.
AAP MP Sanjay Singh further claim that one of his party workers, Uday Gill, detain by the police without any reason. In a post on X, Singh confirmed that he was at the Mandir Marg Police Station, urging for Gill’s release. However, the official handle of the DCP New Delhi clarified on X that Gill had been detained for allegedly forcing people to join a particular political party’s campaign.
Amid the ongoing elections, BJP National President JP Nadda, along with Delhi BJP President Virendraa Sachdeva and Union Minister Harsh Malhotra, visited the Delhi BJP office. Several BJP leaders cast their votes and expressed confidence in their victory, asserting that the party would form a double-engine government in Delhi.
BJP MP Manoj Tiwari, who cast his vote at a polling booth in Yamuna Vihar, took the opportunity to criticize AAP, accusing the party of ‘looting’ Delhi and promising a change in government.
These elections are crucial for AAP, BJP, and Congress. AAP aims to retain power for the third consecutive term, while BJP seeks to reclaim control after a 27-year absence. Congress, which ruled Delhi for 15 years, is hoping for a strong return after struggling in the 2015 and 2020 elections.
Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party candidate for the Milkipur by-election, Ajit Prasad, voiced concerns over the voting process and alleged interference by certain elements. Prasad claimed that while the votes were in favor of the Samajwadi Party, ‘mischievous elements’ and local police were pressuring voters against supporting his party. He also allegd that his party’s election agents restricted from entering polling booths.
The Milkipur constituency, a Scheduled Castes (SC)-reserved seat, is home to 3,70,829 voters. The main contest in the bypoll is between Samajwadi Party’s Ajit Prasad and BJP’s Chandrabhanu Paswan.
The counting of votes for both the Delhi Assembly elections and the bypolls in Milkipur and Erode will take place on February 8.
