Union Home Minister Amit Shah attended Vijayadashami celebrations in Ludhiana, Punjab, on Tuesday and burned a symbolic Ravana effigy representing ‘chitta’, a term associated with drugs in the state.
Addressing the gathering, Shah explained that Ravana Dahan represents the victory of good over evil.
He urged people to overcome ego, pride, greed and other personal failings, recalling Lord Ram’s victory over Ravana as the foundation of the festival’s enduring significance.
Shah also highlighted Ludhiana’s long association with the traditional ceremony.
He recalled hearing since childhood that people should visit the city to witness Ravana Dahan organised by the Ramlila Committee, which he said had continued the tradition for 200 years.
Shah said he had met families at three locations in Punjab who had lost their sons in the fight against drugs. He described their tears, questions and suffering as deeply moving.
The Home Minister said the Punjab government had transferred one murder investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
He called on the state government to hand over two other murder cases to the agency.
Shah assured the families that the authorities would pursue justice. He declared that the Centre would identify and prosecute anyone involved in the killings, irrespective of their influence.
Shah pledged to rid Punjab of the drug trade by December 31, 2029. He said achieving this goal would honour the three individuals who had lost their lives.
He also encouraged Punjab residents to report drug trafficking through the Narcotics Control Bureau’s toll-free helpline.
Citing the removal of Articles 370 and 35A, the government’s anti-terrorism efforts and its campaign against Naxalism, Shah also said the Centre would intensify its efforts to eliminate the drug trade.
