The skies over Varanasi reverberated with the roar of fighter jets on Thursday as the Indian Air Force (IAF) launched its first air show in the city.
The ‘Wings Over Ganga’ event drew large crowds to the ghats, where spectators watched Rafale, Sukhoi-30 MKI, Mirage-2000 and Tejas aircraft perform high-speed manoeuvres and breathtaking aerobatic displays above the river.
The performance showcased the IAF’s operational capabilities, modern military technology and pilots’ precision in controlling aircraft during complex manoeuvres. Helicopters and special forces personnel also added to the spectacle, offering spectators a glimpse of the armed forces’ capabilities.
Rafale jets emerged as a major attraction, performing sharp turns, 180-degree manoeuvres and changes in speed and altitude over the Ganga. Sukhoi-30 MKI and other fighter aircraft also impressed spectators with their agility and coordinated formations.
Chinook helicopters drew attention by demonstrating the deployment of personnel over the river. Members of the IAF’s Garud special forces also participated, highlighting the coordination between aircraft and ground personnel during operations.
According to the scheduled programme, around 100 aircraft took part in the show, including 52 fighter jets, 15 transport aircraft, 32 helicopters and one vintage aircraft.
The aircraft operated from 12 airbases across the country, including the naval air station at Arakkonam near Chennai. The programme featured 25 formations showcasing the services’ flying skills and operational coordination.
Rafale, Sukhoi, Tejas and other fighter jets, alongside helicopters and transport aircraft, featured in the show.
The Surya Kiran and Sarang teams were key attractions, while the ‘Prachand’ formation showcased the IAF’s combat capabilities. Further performances are scheduled for October 24 and 25.
