A passenger bus overturned in Udhampur district on Monday, leaving at least 14 people dead and 33 others injured, officials said.
The accident occurred while the bus was travelling from Ramnagar to Udhampur town.
Officials said the vehicle turned turtle during the journey, though the exact cause of the incident is still under investigation.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Prem Singh confirmed the revised casualty figures, adding that rescue efforts are ongoing. Some of the injured are now at the Government Medical College hospital in Udhampur. Others are receiving treatment in Ramnagar.
“Right now, the priority is to rescue the injured and provide them with all possible medical help,” the officer stated.
Earlier, taking to X Union Minister Jitendra Singh posted, “Just now spoke to DC Udhampur, Sh Minga Sherpa after learning about a tragic road accident, less than an hour ago, at village Kanote, involving a public transport bus on way from Ramnagar to Udhampur.”
J&K Lt Governor Manoj Sinha expressed grief over the incident and directed authorities to ensure full support for victims.
Taking to X, he posted, “Tragic road accident in Udhampur is heartbreaking. My deepest condolences to bereaved families. May God grant them strength. Praying for speedy recovery of injured. Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
Officials say challenging terrain, along with overspeeding and overloading, often contribute to road accidents in the region. Authorities have deployed special enforcement teams in hilly districts to curb unsafe driving practices.
Further details should emerge as rescue and investigation efforts continue.
