In a devastating incident that shook the residents of Uttar Pradesh’s Hardoi district, 8 members of a family lost their lives while 1 sustained serious injuries after a sand-laden truck overturned and collapsed on them late Tuesday night.
The heart-wrenching accident occurred as the truck, laden with sand mined from the banks of the Ganga river, lost balance and toppled over, burying an entire family residing by the roadside under a cascade of sand.
Rescuers swiftly initiated efforts to rescue the victims upon receiving the report of the incident.
However, when emergency responders managed to extricate the trapped individuals from beneath the sand and the overturned truck, they had already claimed 8 lives, including 4 innocent children.
District Magistrate M P Singh of Hardoi offered a detailed account of the tragic event, explaining that a truck, laden with sand from a mining operation, veered off course and overturned at a sharp bend while heading towards Hardoi.
“The authorities identified the excessive load of sand as the main cause of the accident. Swift response from the authorities followed upon receiving the distress call, resulting in the rescue of those trapped under the debris. Regrettably, despite efforts, only one girl survived the ordeal, as the others succumbed to their injuries,” the District Magistrate added.
Initial confusion clouded the identity of the victims until authorities discovered they belonged to the Balla family, residing in the vicinity of the accident site.
The painstaking task of clearing the sand and debris commenced immediately, revealing the tragic loss of Balla (45), his wife Mundi (42), daughters Sunaina (5), Lalla (4), and Buddhu (4), along with their son-in-law Karan (25), his wife Hero (22), and their son Komal (5).
Additionally, 1 member of the family, identified as Bittu (4), sustained injuries in the mishap.
“All the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examinations, and the driver of the truck has been apprehended,” affirmed the District Magistrate, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
As investigations into the root cause of the accident unfold, officials remain committed to ensuring accountability and preventing similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
The entire community mourns the loss of lives and extends their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, hoping for swift recovery for the injured survivor.
