Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, on Wednesday morning for a State Visit at the invitation of President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.
This marks PM Modi’s first visit to Namibia and only the third Prime Ministerial visit from India to the southern African nation.
Upon arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport, PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome, reflecting the warmth and significance of the bilateral relationship between the two countries.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Landed in Windhoek a short while ago. Namibia is a valued and trusted African partner with whom we seek to boost bilateral cooperation. Looking forward to meeting President Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and addressing the Namibian Parliament today.”
In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted the diplomatic importance of the visit.
“In the final leg of his visit, at the invitation of the President of the Republic of Namibia, HE Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, the Prime Minister will embark on a State Visit to Namibia. This is the first-ever visit of PM Modi to Namibia and the third by an Indian Prime Minister,” the MEA said.
The Prime Minister will hold bilateral talks with President Nandi-Ndaitwah during his visit to explore ways to expand cooperation in trade, energy, defence, and education.
The Prime Minister will pay homage to Namibia’s Founding Father, Dr Sam Nujoma, and address the Namibian Parliament, reinforcing democratic solidarity between the two nations.
The visit reflects the historical depth of India–Namibia relations, which span shared experiences in the struggle for freedom and a commitment to global south cooperation.
India was among the first nations to support Namibia’s independence, and the partnership has since grown across sectors.
“The visit of the Prime Minister is a reiteration of India’s multi-faceted and deep-rooted historical ties with Namibia,” the MEA added.
Namibia is the final stop in PM Modi’s five-nation diplomatic tour, which also included Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, and Brazil.
Before arriving in Namibia, PM Modi concluded a two-day State Visit to Brazil, where he attended the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro and held bilateral discussions with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brasília.
During his Brazil visit, President Lula conferred upon PM Modi the country’s highest civilian honour, The Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross.
Expressing gratitude, PM Modi posted on X, “I’m honoured to have been conferred ‘The Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross.’ Gratitude to President Lula, the Government and the people of Brazil. This illustrates the strong affection the people of Brazil have for the people of India. May our friendship scale even newer heights of success in the times to come.”
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister’s visit to Namibia strengthens strategic and cultural ties, injects fresh momentum into South–South cooperation, and reinforces India’s role as a key partner in Africa’s development journey.
