In a heartbreaking incident in Allipur Bhud village, Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, five members of a family were discovered dead, with two others hospitalized, in a suspected case of asphyxiation caused by smoke emitted from an ‘angeethi’ or coal brazier. The tragic event likely occurred on Monday night while all the victims were asleep.
The police revealed that as none of the seven individuals had left the house since Monday night, concerned villagers broke open the door on Tuesday evening, discovering the entire family unconscious. Subsequently, all seven members were swiftly taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, while two are reported to be in critical condition, the hospital authorities declared five others, identified as Sonam (19), Waris (17), Mehak (16), Zaid (15), and Mahir (12), deceased.
While initial suspicions point towards asphyxiation from the ‘angeethi’ smoke, the police have initiated a probe to determine the exact cause of death. The residence belonged to Raheezuddin, whose three children and two relatives’ children lost their lives in the tragic incident. His wife and brother are reportedly in critical condition.
A robust police presence, including Superintendent of Police Kunwar Anupam Singh, along with administrative officials, has descended upon the scene to conduct a thorough investigation. The burning of an ‘Angithi’ or coal oven releases harmful gases like carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. In closed spaces, limited air circulation can lead to reduced oxygen levels, causing suffocation and, in severe cases, death.
