The Delhi Metro Celebrated 20 Years Of Operating

The Delhi Metro, affectionately known as the “lifeline of the national capital.” It began with a tiny stretch of 8.4 km from Shahdara to Tis Hazari. It now has subsequently expanded to 380 km of network, with ten color-coded lines.

With more than 380 km of new lines installed since 2002. India’s largest metro network boasts several cutting-edge technologies, including two corridors with autonomous metro service.
On December 24, 2002, the first train on the 8.4 km-long Red Line’s corridor was fired off by the then-prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Launching the Delhi Metro’s operations. Since then, the network’s reach throughout Delhi-NCR has increased dramatically.

In the national capital region, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation now runs 391 km of networks with 286 stations on 12 corridors (including Noida-Greater Noida and Rapid Metro, Gurugram). Since 2022 will mark the conclusion of 70 years of diplomatic relations between India and Japan, the DMRC opened a special exhibition to commemorate its vicennial anniversary. The display highlights 20 years of operations as well as the Indo-Japanese relationship.

Suzuki Hiroshi, Japan’s Extraordinary Ambassador to India. He officially opened this exhibition at the Welcome Metro station in the presence of DMRC’s Managing Director Vikas Kumar and Saito Mitsunori, among others.

“This day is historic. The phenomenally successful Delhi Metro is commemorating its 20th birthday. It sparked a revolution and forever changed Delhi… Now, it is assisting numerous additional Indian towns as well as overseas… Women may travel safely and comfortably thanks to the Metro.” Suzuki expressed his happiness that the 70th anniversary of Indo-Japan relations was being commemorated at the same time.
According to Vikas Kumar, the Metro has revolutionized the city’s infrastructure and grown to be one of the biggest metro networks in the world.

When the first Metro line was opened

An official claimed that a million people arrived merely to view the train. When the tokens ran out, the official had to start handing out tickets. Japanese pupils under the direction of Sansei Paritos Kar, who has worked with Rahul Gandhi, put on a spectacular Aikido performance.

The exhibition also includes glimpses of significant events that have occurred in the Metro over the past 20 years.

These events include the opening of significant corridors. The introduction of cutting-edge technology, one-of-a-kind amenities, intriguing trivia, visits by notable individuals. Also the collaboration between Delhi Metro and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and other Japanese organisations that have so far provided financial support for the Metro.

The phase IV project is extending the network even farther, adding an additional 65 km after it is finished. Three of the approved priority corridors of Phase IV are currently being built.

While a new Silver Line would connect Tughlakabad to Delhi Aerocity. The two lines are extension of  current Pink (Majlis Park to Maujpur) and Magenta (R K Ashram Marg to Japankpuri West) Lines.
