Ten Doctors Expelled From RG Kar Medical College Amid Ongoing Investigations

The authorities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata have officially expelled ten doctors, including interns, house staff, and senior residents. This decision further comes in light of serious allegations against them, as they are closely associated with Sandip Ghosh, the former principal facing two ongoing investigations by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Background of the Investigations

The CBI is currently probing Ghosh for his involvement in two significant cases: the tragic rape and murder of a junior doctor in August and allegations of financial irregularities. Sources indicate that all ten expelled doctors were confidants of Ghosh, raising serious concerns about their conduct.

Details of the Expelled Doctors

Among the ten expelled, Ashish Pandey, a house staff member, is already in CBI custody for his alleged role in the financial irregularities. Additionally, Ayushree Thapa is the only female doctor in this group. The other eight doctors expelled are Sourav Pal, Abhishek Sen, Nirjan Bagchi, Sarif Hasan, Neelagni Debnath, Amarendra Singh, Satpal Singh, and Tanweer Ahmed Kazi.

Charges and Immediate Actions

According to the notification obtained the expelled doctors face numerous charges. These include threatening others to fail examinations, coercing juniors into joining a particular political party, sexual harassment, extortion, filing false FIRs against students, and committing acts of physical violence. The authorities further instructed them to vacate the medical college hostel within 72 hours of the notification. Additionally, they will review their registration papers and forward them to the West Bengal Medical Council for further action.

Protests by Junior Doctors

Moreover, in response to these developments, the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF), which leads the movement against the recent rape and murder case, announced a unique form of protest. They plan to provide medical services to patients while simultaneously participating in a hunger strike. Six junior doctors, comprising three males and three females, have volunteered for this initiative and began their hunger strike on Saturday evening.

This ongoing situation at RG Kar Medical College continues to unfold, raising critical questions about accountability and the safety of medical professionals.
