Technological Methods Help Accurately Estimate Crowd Numbers At Maha Kumbh 2025

With over 45 crore people already taking part in the Maha Kumbh 2025, experts predict that the figure could soon surpass 50 crore, marking it as the largest gathering in human history. However, one crucial question arises: how is such an enormous crowd counted? Is it purely an estimate, or are scientific and technical processes involved in making these calculations? Let’s take a closer look at how these numbers are determined and the advanced technologies used for this purpose.

In the modern era, several technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Satellite Imaging, Mobile Network Data Analytics, and the Internet of Things (IoT), are employed to accurately estimate crowd numbers. These methods enhance the reliability and precision of counting the crowd.

AI-powered CCTV And Video Analytics

At large-scale events like Maha Kumbh, CCTV cameras are installed at various locations, equipped with AI-powered video analytics. These systems analyze real-time video footage to track how many people pass through specific areas, ensuring accurate crowd counts.

Drones play a crucial role in monitoring crowd movement from above. These drones are equipped with special technology that allows them to conduct aerial surveillance, measure population density, and estimate the number of people in a specific area. As drones capture live footage, they provide a clear overview of the entire gathering, contributing to accurate crowd analysis.

Mobile Network Data Analytics: Tracking Active Phones

Mobile Network Data Analytics is another effective technique used for crowd counting. By assessing how many mobile phones are active in a designated area, officials can estimate crowd size. During the Maha Kumbh, the fair area is surrounded by Geo-Fencing, allowing authorities to track the number of active mobile phones in the vicinity. Given that nearly every individual carries a mobile phone, this data offers a fairly reliable estimate, though some exclusions—like young children—may apply.

GPS And Geospatial Technology for Precise Estimates

To improve accuracy, GPS and Geospatial Technology are used to track movement within a specified area. Geo-Fencing technology defines boundaries and estimates the number of people present within them. Alongside this, the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart sensors—such as infrared and ultrasonic sensors—are installed to track movements and help calculate crowd size.

Satellite images provide a bird’s-eye view of the entire event space. By calculating the area occupied by people, experts can estimate the crowd density and determine how many individuals can fit in the space. This method complements the other technologies, contributing to a more accurate overall estimate.

RFID And Biometric Tracking for Crowd Management

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) cards are distributed to volunteers, security personnel, and event organizers. These cards are scanned to ensure authorized presence at the venue. In addition, biometric scanners and QR code systems are installed at various locations. As people pass through these systems, their presence is automatically recorded, providing data for crowd estimation.

These technologies not only help estimate the crowd but also strengthen crowd management and security by monitoring who enters the venue and their movements.

Accuracy Of The Count: Estimated, Not Exact

Despite the advanced techniques, some question whether the government’s crowd numbers are exaggerated. It is important to understand that these figures are estimates derived from the data collected through these various technologies. While 100% accuracy is not achievable, the margin of error is typically around 5-10%. For example, if the crowd is estimated at 5 crore people, the actual number could range from 4.5 crore to 5.5 crore.

This is why the crowd figures presented at Maha Kumbh are considered estimated, based on a combination of scientific methods and modern technologies. Nevertheless, these estimates provide a highly reliable indication of the event’s scale.

Conclusion

The use of cutting-edge technologies in the Maha Kumbh 2025 demonstrates how modern tools can enhance crowd management and provide more accurate crowd estimates. While some degree of error is inevitable, these advanced methods significantly improve the reliability of the data, ensuring that the scale of this grand spiritual event is measured with greater precision than ever before.
