Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin inaugurated the Main Pavilion at the SDAT Tennis Stadium in Chennai, naming it the ‘Vijay Amritraj Pavilion’ to honor the legendary tennis player for his contributions to the sport. The inauguration aims to inspire future generations and recognize Amritraj’s achievements in placing Indian tennis on the global map.
During the event, Udhayanidhi Stalin expressed his happiness in unveiling the pavilion in Amritraj’s honor. He remarked, “I am happy to unveil this. When Vijay Amritraj was young, he faced health issues, but through determination and hard work, he succeeded in life and made our country proud.”
Amritraj, one of India’s most celebrated tennis players, overcame significant obstacles in his youth, including health challenges, to become a global icon in tennis. His career includes numerous victories at international tournaments, and he has played a vital role in promoting Indian tennis globally.
Stalin also highlighted the growth of tennis in Tamil Nadu, crediting athletes like Amritraj for inspiring younger generations to take up the sport. “Tennis is growing well in Tamil Nadu,” he added, underlining the state’s commitment to nurturing new talent and improving sports infrastructure.
The event stands as part of the state’s broader initiative to honor Tamil Nadu’s sports icons and encourage youth participation in various sports, particularly tennis. The newly inaugurated pavilion is expected to inspire budding players to follow in Amritraj’s footsteps and continue contributing to the sport on a global level.
