Chennai Air Intelligence Unit Seizes 4,967 Red-Eared Slider Turtles Smuggled From Malaysia

The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) at Chennai International Airport seized 4,967 red-eared slider turtles along with 19 albino red-eared slider turtles. Customs officials arrested two individuals involved in the smuggling operation from Kuala Lumpur.

Customs Officials Act on Specific Intelligence

Acting on a tip-off, Customs officials detained two passengers arriving from Kuala Lumpur on September 27. During inspection, the officials discovered the turtles, which had been smuggled into the country. The recovered animals include 4,967 green red-eared slider turtles and 19 albino varieties.

Wildlife Experts Confirm Species

The Wildlife Crime Control Bureau confirmed that the seized turtles were exotic species. Both the passenger carrying the turtles and a second individual waiting to receive them at the airport were arrested under provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. The case is under further investigation.
