Surendra Koli, Nithari Case Accused; Dies By Suicide In Haridwar

Police said Surendra Koli, an accused in the Nithari killings case, died by suicide in Uttarakhand’s Haridwar on September 18.

Police found his body at a tea stall in the Bhupatwala area of north Haridwar.

The incident reportedly took place opposite Lalmata Temple on Sapt Sarovar Road. Koli had reportedly been running the tea stall for the past few days.

Police from the Saptarishi outpost reached the spot after receiving information, took possession of the body and began an investigation.

Police identified the deceased as Koli, a resident of Mangrukhal village in Almora district. Officials have informed his family members and are investigating all aspects of the incident.

Koli was one of the accused in the Nithari killings that came to light in 2006 after the discovery of human remains near a house in Sector 31, Noida.

The case involved allegations concerning the disappearance and deaths of children and young women and led to multiple criminal cases against Koli and businessman Moninder Singh Pandher.

Koli faced convictions in several cases during the long-running proceedings. However, the Allahabad High Court acquitted him in 12 cases in 2023, citing serious evidentiary concerns.

In November 2025, the Supreme Court allowed his curative petition and set aside his conviction in the final pending Nithari case, ordering his release if he was not required in another case.

The Supreme Court noted that the prosecution evidence had fundamental legal shortcomings and held that suspicion could not replace proof beyond reasonable doubt.

Police are continuing their investigation into Koli’s death in Haridwar.
