Sonam Wangchuk’s Wife Urges Safdarjung Hospital Not To Administer Treatment Without Consent

Gitanjali J Angmo, wife of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, has formally requested Safdarjung Hospital not to administer any medicine or intravenous fluids to her husband without first obtaining her consent. She submitted the letter shortly after Wangchuk was admitted to the hospital following a decline in his health during his 21-day hunger strike.

Addressing the Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital, Angmo stated that no oral medication, intravenous fluids, or any other form of treatment should be provided to Wangchuk unless the family approves it in advance. She stressed that hospital authorities must treat her request as mandatory and must not overlook it.

Angmo maintained that Wangchuk’s vital parameters, including his potassium level, were within the normal range on Friday and cited a reading of 4.3 recorded on 17 July. She also insisted that doctors must share all medical reports with the family before starting any treatment.

Gitanjali J Angmo added that the family had not received copies of any diagnostic reports as of Saturday morning.

According to her, hospital staff had only verbally informed them that Wangchuk’s potassium level had fallen to 2.9, without providing documentary evidence.

Case Background

Wangchuk had been observing a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi before doctors advised him to move to Safdarjung Hospital for medical treatment.

Delhi Police transferred him to the hospital amid protests and slogans raised by supporters at the demonstration site.

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which is spearheading the protest demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged NEET-UG paper leak, confirmed that the agitation would continue.

CJP Founder Abhijeet Dipke accused Delhi Police of using force against him while he attempted to reach Jantar Mantar after Wangchuk’s hospitalisation.

Dipke claimed that Delhi Police officers dragged and assaulted him, alleged that they removed Wangchuk from the protest site against his wishes, and announced that he would begin his own hunger strike in solidarity.
