Sonam Wangchuk Says He Will End Fast Only If Three Conditions Are Met

Activist Sonam Wangchuk on Monday said he would end his indefinite hunger strike only if three conditions were met, as he completed 23 days of fasting at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi.

After doctors admitted him to the hospital on July 18, Wangchuk shared a handwritten letter on X, alleging that authorities had placed him under ‘illegal detention’. In the letter, he outlined the conditions under which he would end his protest.

Wangchuk said he would end his fast if the government accepted responsibility for education system failures, particularly repeated paper leaks, and promised corrective action. He also asked MPs to assure him that they would raise the issue in Parliament.

If his health worsened, Wangchuk said he would end the fast only after political leaders gave the same assurance at Safdarjung Hospital.

Wangchuk said he launched the protest against recurring paper leaks and urged the government to introduce reforms. His prolonged fast has sparked widespread concern over his health.

The hospital has stated that he is receiving continuous medical care under close supervision due to the seriousness of his condition.

Reiterating his stand, Wangchuk said he would not end the protest based on verbal assurances alone. He maintained that only concrete commitments from the government or elected representatives to address the issues in Parliament would persuade him to conclude his hunger strike.
