In a symbolic gesture honouring India’s agrarian heritage, former Secretary of the Gandhi Peace Foundation, Surendra Kumar, presented a newly released four-volume series of works by Swami Sahajanand Saraswati to Janata Dal (United) senior leader KC Tyagi.
The collection, edited and translated by Prof Ramchandra Pradhan of Delhi University, chronicles the thoughts and struggles of the architect of India’s farmers’ movement and freedom fighter.
The series includes four key editions:
The release actively reintroduces Sahajanand’s vision to a new generation of readers and activists, highlighting his crucial role in shaping India’s rural consciousness.
Speaking at the occasion, Surendra Kumar noted, “Swamiji’s life and ideology continue to inspire present-day farmer movements.”
Echoing this sentiment, KC Tyagi described the publication as “a significant contribution to the rewriting of farmers’ history in India.”
Scholars say these works resonate deeply in today’s context of agrarian reforms and social equity. They reflect Sahajanand’s persistent advocacy for farmers’ rights, land redistribution, and collective empowerment.
Swami Sahajanand Saraswati was born in Deva village of Dullahpur, Ghazipur. He was not only a spiritual ascetic but also a revolutionary organiser.
As the founder of the All India Kisan Sabha, he mobilised rural India against British rule, fusing spirituality with political activism.
In June 2025, the Swami Sahajanand Saraswati Smriti Nyas marked its 75th death anniversary with a special commemorative event. The gathering celebrated his lifelong contributions to social justice and rural upliftment.
Foundation founder Maruti Kumar Rai reflected that Swamiji, despite his ascetic vows, devoted his entire life to the cause of peasants and reform. His commitment continues to serve as an enduring inspiration for India’s youth and their ongoing pursuit of equality.
