The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday appointed Sat Sharma as its new J&K unit president, replacing Ravinder Raina. BJP President JP Nadda announced the change, effective immediately, according to party sources.
Ravinder Raina, who recently lost the Nowshera Assembly seat to National Conference (NC) candidate Surinder Choudhary, has now been appointed to the BJP’s national working committee. Choudhary serves as Deputy Chief Minister in the Omar Abdullah-led J&K government.
In the 90-member J&K Assembly, BJP secured 29 seats, all from the Jammu division. The NC won 42 seats, while Congress claimed six, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) three, CPI(M) one, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) one, People’s Conference (PC) one, and independents took seven seats. Six independent candidates later joined the NC.

The NC and Congress had formed a pre-poll alliance, with Congress supporting the NC government while opting not to join the government until J&K’s statehood is restored.
Since taking office, the new J&K cabinet has passed a resolution calling for the return of statehood, which Chief Minister Omar Abdullah presented to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The NC also plans to introduce a resolution to restore Article 370, fulfilling a key election promise.
