The first day of the Tamil Nadu Assembly session turned chaotic as AIADMK MLAs, led by Leader of Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami, protested against the DMK government over the Anna University sexual assault case. Opposition members entered the House wearing badges reading “Yaar Antha Sir?” (Who is that Sir?), referring to the controversial phrase linked to the case.
Palaniswami and other AIADMK members demanded an explanation from the ruling party. The uproar escalated into a heated confrontation, resulting in the forcible eviction of AIADMK legislators from the House.
The sexual assault occurred on December 23 when a second-year engineering student was attacked on campus. The accused, a 37-year-old biryani vendor named Gnanshekharan, allegedly assaulted the victim and her male friend. Police swiftly arrested the suspect following the victim’s complaint.
Adding to the political tension, the Greater Chennai police detained AIADMK Students’ Wing Secretary Singai Ramachandran and others for attempting to distribute black armbands to Anna University students in protest. Despite police warnings and denied permissions, the AIADMK student body announced a demonstration near the campus. Heavy police presence led to multiple arrests, including Ramachandran.
Governor’s Walkout Adds To Drama
Meanwhile, Governor RN Ravi walked out of the Assembly, accusing Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Speaker M. Appavu of disrespecting the Constitution and the National Anthem. The Raj Bhavan claimed the Assembly violated protocol by not singing the National Anthem during the session.
The AIADMK vowed to raise the arrests of their student leaders and demanded accountability for campus safety. The Assembly session’s tumultuous start highlighted growing political and administrative tensions in the state.
