Rouse Avenue Court To Review Framing Of Charges Against Congress Leader Jagdish Tytler In 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots Case

The Rouse Avenue Court has scheduled a hearing for July 8 to address inquiries regarding the framing of charges against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in connection with the killings of Sikhs in Pul Bangash during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. During the recent session, Special Judge Rakesh Sayal sought clarification from the investigating officer regarding the credibility of the previously filed chargesheet. Additionally, the court requested a copy of the relevant order.

Manu Sharma, the lawyer representing Jagdish Tytler, concluded his arguments by refuting the claims made by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Sharma highlighted that the CBI had submitted two closure reports and presented a supplementary chargesheet last year. Notably, the CBI had previously charged co-accused Suresh Kumar Panewala in 2009, who was subsequently acquitted by the court. Sharma emphasized the absence of witnesses from 1984 until 2022-23, raising doubts about the credibility of witnesses emerging after such a significant lapse in time.

The case pertains to the alleged murders of three Sikhs – Thakur Singh, Badal Singh, and Gurcharan Singh – in front of Pul Bangash Gurudwara on November 1, 1984, with Congress leader Jagdish Tytler being the primary accused. The CBI filed charges against Tytler on May 20 in connection with the riots following the assassination of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984.
