A stone quarry collapsed in the Aizawl district of Mizoram due to the constant rain caused by the Remal cyclone. The collapse claimed the lives of 12 people while several others were missing.
Updating about the situation the Disaster Management and Police officials said that ten bodies have been recovered. However, many are still trapped under the rubble.
The Disaster Management workers, Police and locals were making efforts to rescue people who were trapped under the debris, that collapsed in the morning. However, intense wind and heavy rain continuously hindered the rescue operation, a Disaster Management official informed. The rescue team is still unaware of the number of people trapped under the rubble.
Of all the victims, seven were locals and the remaining were from outside the state, informed an official.
At least two deaths have been recorded in other districts as a result of the rain-caused landslides, which have also hampered vehicular traffic between the districts.
The landslides and the intense rain caused several houses, buildings, roads, and bridges to beheaved away.

Chief Minister of the state Lalduhoma held an emergency meeting with the state Home Minister K. Sapdanga, Chief Secretary Renu Sharma and other officials to review the situation.
The Mizoram Chief Minister announced a Rs 15 crore fund to aid the affected and a Rs 4 lakh ex gratia payment per deceased in the landslides.
Schools were closed and all the government workers except those involved in essential services were asked to work from home.
