India on Saturday welcomed the upcoming meeting of US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15.
“India welcomes the understanding reached between the United States and the Russian Federation for a meeting in Alaska on 15th August 2025,” the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement.
The MEA reiterated India’s stance, noting that Prime Minister Modi has emphasised on multiple occasions, “This is not an era of war.”
Expressing optimism over the summit, the MEA stated, “This meeting holds the promise of bringing to an end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and opening up the prospects for peace.”
“India, therefore, endorses the upcoming Summit meeting and stands ready to support such efforts,” it added.
Earlier in the day, Trump announced that he will be meeting his Russian counterpart on August 15 in Alaska to discuss ending Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Announcing the summit, the US President said that Putin has a 30-day deadline to agree to a ceasefire and a roadmap for peace. He also threatened ‘severe consequences that no one wants to see’ if both parties failed to reach a settlement.
Donald Trump stated the Alaska delibration could involve ‘some swapping of the territories’ for the benefit of both Russia and Ukraine.
On the other hand, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky cautioned that any negotiation excluding Kyiv would lead to a ‘dead solution’ and that ‘Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier’.
