Rajya Sabha Adjourned Amid Tensions Over No-Trust Notice Against Chairman Dhankhar

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned on Friday until December 16 following an ongoing standoff between the treasury benches and the Opposition over a no-confidence notice against Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. With both sides unwilling to compromise, the adjournment marked the continuation of tensions in the Upper House.

Opposition Insists On No-Trust Motion As BJP Raises Alleged Soros Link

The opposition remained firm in its demand regarding the no-confidence motion, leading to heightened exchanges in the House. BJP MPs, in turn, raised the issue of an alleged connection between former Congress president Sonia Gandhi and US billionaire George Soros. This sparked a series of noisy exchanges, further escalating the already tense atmosphere.

Amid these disruptions and the lack of prospects for normal proceedings, the Chairman decided to adjourn the session until Monday.

JP Nadda Condemns Criticism Of The Chair

On Thursday, Union Minister and Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha, JP Nadda, strongly condemned Congress and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Mallikarjun Kharge for what he described as “demeaning” and “derogating” Constitutional positions. Nadda particularly took issue with the Opposition’s questioning of the Chair’s authority.

He emphasized that the Chairman’s rulings on admissibility could not be questioned, stating, “To do so is contempt of the House and the Chairman.” Nadda’s remarks came as Opposition MPs continued to shout slogans, disrupting his speech.

Expressing his disappointment, Nadda remarked, “With sadness, I must say that yesterday, one of the most senior and experienced leaders, Mallikarjun Kharge, conducted a press conference and criticised the Chair. This is condemnable and objectionable. It paves the way for a wrong tradition.”

Kharge Criticizes Chairman Dhankhar In Press Conference

The day before, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge and leaders of the INDIA bloc sharply criticized Chairman Dhankhar during a joint press conference. Kharge accused the Chairman of repeatedly stalling the proceedings with what he called a “headmaster-type attitude” and treating Parliament “like a school.”

Kharge’s statements went further as he accused Vice President Dhankhar of being the “biggest disruptor” in the House. He also alleged that the Chairman often acted as a “spokesperson of the ruling party,” showing partisan behavior.

The ongoing tensions between the treasury benches and the Opposition suggest that the standoff will continue to shape the dynamics of the Rajya Sabha in the coming days.
