In Uttar Pradesh’s Raebareli, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi secured a resounding victory, upholding the party’s stronghold in the region for the fifth consecutive time. Preliminary figures revealed that Gandhi surpassed his opponent, BJP’s Dinesh Pratap Singh, by a margin exceeding three lakh votes, marking a larger victory margin compared to his mother’s win in 2019.
Though the Election Commission of India has yet to officially declare Gandhi’s triumph, early data indicates his lead over Singh by more than 3.8 lakh votes. Following Gandhi’s defeat in his traditional stronghold of Amethi to Smriti Irani in the 2019 general elections, there was speculation regarding his next move in Uttar Pradesh. However, this time, his mother Sonia Gandhi graciously passed on the Raebareli constituency to him, ensuring the Gandhi family’s continued representation in the region.
Additionally, Gandhi secured another significant victory in Kerala’s Wayanad constituency, retaining his seat in the southern state by defeating the CPI’s Annie Raja with a margin exceeding 3.5 lakh votes. While his victory margin in Raebareli appears to be larger than in Wayanad, final numbers await confirmation from the Election Commission.
Gandhi had previously won the Wayanad seat in 2019 by a substantial margin, receiving 7,06,367 votes out of a total of 10,92,197.
Sonia Gandhi, who has held the Raebareli seat since 2004, opted out of the Lok Sabha race this time and moved to the Rajya Sabha.
In Uttar Pradesh, the latest trends indicate the opposition INDIA bloc leading in approximately 40 out of 80 Lok Sabha seats. Meanwhile, in Kerala, the Congress-led UDF appears to be maintaining its performance from 2019, holding a comfortable lead with only one seat going to the BJP.
