Prohibitory Orders Extended In Tripura Village Amid Tension Over Idol Defacing

Prohibitory orders have been extended in Jirania subdivision of West Tripura. This follows recent violence triggered by the defacing of an idol at a Kali temple.

On Monday, prohibitory orders were imposed after a series of violent incidents in the area. Unidentified assailants attacked Koitorabari late Sunday night. They torched at least 16 houses and several vehicles, leaving four people injured. In response, a large contingent of the CRPF, Tripura State Rifles (TSR), and state police have been deployed.

Director General of Police, Intelligence, Anurag Dhankar, West Tripura District Superintendent of Police, Kiran Kumar K, and District Magistrate Vishal Kumar have all visited the affected area. The violence occurred 12 km from Agartala, and senior police officials are now stationed in the region.

On Tuesday night, the West Tripura district administration extended the prohibitory order under Section 163 of the BNSS. An official statement explained that the Superintendent of Police reported ongoing risks of peace breaches, danger to life and property, and potential injury. Thus, further restrictions on movement are deemed necessary to prevent further disturbances.

The District Magistrate’s order stated, “…..as per information received from the Superintendent of Police, West Tripura, there is still an apprehension of breach of peace and tranquillity, danger to human life and property, obstruction and injury to persons under Jirania subdivision. I am satisfied that there are sufficient grounds for imposing further restrictions on movement of people to prevent any untoward incident and to prevent a breach of public peace and tranquillity and imposition of prohibitory order under Section 163 of the BNSS, 2023 is urgently required in the entire Jirania subdivision till August 31.”

Additionally, Transport and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, the local MLA, visited the affected areas. He urged residents to maintain calm and communal harmony.

The opposition Congress and CPI-M have accused the ruling BJP of exploiting the situation for political gain. In response, BJP’s state General Secretary, Amit Rakshit, called on opposition parties to avoid politicizing the issue. Rakshit emphasized that the state is already dealing with the aftermath of a severe flood affecting many people.
