Since the Congress Party announced Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s candidacy for the Wayanad Lok Sabha by-election, speculation had been rife in Kerala about whether she could surpass her brother Rahul Gandhi’s impressive victory margin. On Saturday, Priyanka Gandhi came remarkably close, securing her first electoral win with a strong margin of 4.08 lakh votes.
While Priyanka Gandhi’s margin was slightly below Rahul Gandhi’s 4.30 lakh votes in the 2019 elections, it marked a significant achievement. In the April 2024 elections, Rahul Gandhi’s victory margin had dipped to 3.64 lakh, signaling a closer race.

Despite Rahul’s decision to vacate the Wayanad seat to retain the Rae Bareli constituency in Uttar Pradesh, any discontent in the region seemed to vanish upon the announcement of Priyanka Gandhi’s candidacy.
The Wayanad district had suffered immensely during the worst landslide in its history, which affected four villages in July. However, the visit of Priyanka and her siblings, Rahul and Sonia Gandhi, was warmly received. Priyanka’s visit to file her nomination, accompanied by her mother and brother, attracted a jubilant reception, reflecting the locals’ enthusiasm.
Priyanka Gandhi campaigned in the hilly constituency for a total of 14 days, drawing large crowds at every venue. Her energetic campaigning contributed to heightened political activity in the region, although the voter turnout on November 13 saw a decline, dropping from 73.57% in April 2024 to 64.22%.
When the vote counting commenced, Priyanka Gandhi surged ahead from the beginning, securing a decisive victory. The major losers of the election were the CPI and BJP candidates, Sathyan Mokheri and Navya Haridas, both of whom failed to match the performance of their respective party candidates in the April 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
While CPI’s Annie Raja secured 2.83 lakh votes and BJP’s K. Surendran garnered 1.41 lakh votes in the previous election, Mokheri only managed 2.09 lakh votes, and Haridas secured a mere 1.09 lakh votes.
T. Siddique, Priyanka Gandhi’s election manager in Wayanad, was seen beaming with happiness as the results came in. He mentioned that Priyanka Gandhi had personally called him to express her gratitude. “She will be coming to Wayanad very soon to thank the people and will continue to serve them in Parliament,” Siddique said.
Priyanka Gandhi’s victory in Wayanad marks a promising start to her political career, reaffirming the Congress party’s influence in the region as she takes on a larger role in national politics.
