President Murmu, PM Modi, Leaders Extend Civil Services Day Wishes

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked Civil Services Day by acknowledging the contribution of government officials and urging them to maintain high standards of public service.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Greetings to all civil servants on Civil Services Day. This is an occasion to further strengthen the resolve to work towards good governance and nation building.”

“From the grassroots to policy-making, the efforts of civil servants touch countless lives and contribute to India’s progress. May our civil servants continue to serve with excellence, compassion and innovation, upholding the highest standards of duty,” the post read.

Earlier, President Droupadi Murmu also extended her greetings, highlighting the importance of the civil services in strengthening institutions and improving citizens’ quality of life. She emphasised that their work, spanning policy design to implementation, remains central to building a more inclusive and forward-looking India.

Echoing similar sentiments, Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the role of civil servants in executing policies and ensuring governance reaches people effectively. He further said their integrity and commitment are vital to the country’s development.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also acknowledged the efforts of civil service professionals, describing them as a key pillar supporting India’s growth and administrative strength.

Observed each year on 21 April, Civil Services Day recognises the work of India’s bureaucracy and its role in governance.

The Government of India formally instituted the observance in 2006, with the inaugural event held at Vigyan Bhawan.

The date holds historical significance as well. On this day in 1947, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel addressed newly inducted civil servants, famously referring to them as the ‘steel frame’ underpinning the nation’s administrative system.
