President Murmu Pays Tribute To Jallianwala Bagh Martyrs On Anniversary

President Droupadi Murmu on Monday honoured the martyrs of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, describing their sacrifice as a lasting source of inspiration for the nation. Marking the 107th anniversary, she said the tragedy awakened a renewed national consciousness and strengthened India’s resolve for independence.

Taking to X, President Murmu posted, “I pay my humble tribute to all the immortal freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives in Jallianwala Bagh. This incident instilled a new consciousness and firm resolve for freedom among the countrymen. The nation will always remain grateful to them. I am confident that their spirit of patriotism will continue to inspire everyone to move forward on the path of national service with dedication and loyalty.”

April 13 marks a dark chapter in India’s history, when British colonial rule exposed its brutality. The massacre became a major catalyst in intensifying the freedom movement, shifting public sentiment decisively against colonial authority.

The incident unfolded during the Baisakhi festival at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar. Thousands of unarmed civilians had gathered, unaware that martial law had banned public assemblies. Acting Brigadier Reginald Dyer arrived with troops and, without warning, ordered firing on the crowd.

For nearly 10 to 15 minutes, soldiers fired over 1,650 rounds. The enclosed garden, with limited exits, left people trapped.

Official figures reported 379 deaths and around 1,200 injuries, though actual casualties are believed to have exceeded 1,000.

The massacre remains one of the most significant and tragic milestones in India’s struggle for independence.
