President Droupadi Murmu paid heartfelt floral tributes at the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex in Imphal on the occasion of the 86th Nupi Lal Day.
The commemoration marks two historic women-led uprisings in 1904 and 1939, during which Manipuri women rose in unity against oppressive British policies.
The President, who is on a two-day visit to the state, was accompanied by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, who also offered his respects at the memorial.
Governor Bhalla emphasised that Nupi Lal, popularly known as Nupilan Numit, stands as a powerful reminder of the courage, resilience and patriotic fervour of Manipuri women.
He noted that the uprisings were not merely protests but compelling demonstrations of women’s leadership and social consciousness.
He added that the sacrifices of those women underline the importance of empowering women for the progress of any society.
The Governor appealed to the people of Manipur to uphold the legacy of Nupi Lal by continuing to strive for harmony and unity.
Visit to Shree Govindaji Temple
Following her tribute, President Murmu visited the historic Shree Govindaji Temple at Palace Compound, situated around two kilometres from the memorial.
She offered prayers for peace and prosperity in the state during her visit.
The President later departed for the Senapati district, a Naga tribal-majority region, where she addressed a public gathering.
During the programme, she laid foundation stones and inaugurated several development projects aimed at strengthening infrastructure and improving public services.
This marks her first visit to Manipur since assuming office, and holds particular significance in light of the ethnic violence the state has witnessed.
On Thursday, President Murmu addressed a civic reception hosted by the Manipur government at the City Convention Centre.
Acknowledging the ‘unfortunate violence’ experienced by the people of Manipur, she assured them that the Centre is fully aware of their hardships.
She reiterated that the Government of India stands firmly with every affected family and is committed to restoring harmony, ensuring security and promoting equitable development across the state.
Before the reception, the President attended a polo exhibition match at the historic Imphal Polo Ground, considered one of the oldest polo grounds in the world.
She also met a group of Internally Displaced Persons, assuring them that the government is working to secure their homes, livelihoods and long-term well-being, while emphasising the importance of strengthening social harmony in Manipur.
