On Friday morning, 15 August, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will give his customary Independence Day address from the ramparts of the Red Fort.
Independence Day, observed annually on 15 August to mark India’s liberation from more than 200 years of British colonial rule in 1947. The day features flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural performances, and tributes to the nation’s freedom fighters.
While past celebrations have been tied to official themes such as unity, patriotism, social development, and sacrifice, no theme has been announced so far this year.
In the run-up to the occasion, several iconic sites in Delhi have hosted live performances by bands from the Armed Forces, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), Railway Protection Force (RPF), and National Cadet Corps (NCC). These events aim to stir patriotic sentiment while showcasing music, discipline, and coordination.
Security forces have strengthened arrangements in the capital and imposed traffic restrictions around India Gate, Mandi House, and Mathura Road.
Officials have advised vehicles without parking permits to steer clear of these routes to ease congestion.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has also announced special operations for 15 August, with services beginning at 4 AM on all lines to accommodate guests, invitees, and the public attending the Red Fort ceremony.
Trains will run every 30 minutes until 6 AM, after which the normal timetable will resume.
