Pranab Mukherjee’s Candid Critique: Rahul Gandhi’s Office Blunder And Leadership Doubts

The new book, “Pranab My Father,” penned by Congress veteran Pranab Mukherjee’s daughter, Sharmishtha Mukherjee, sheds light on Pranab’s reservations about Rahul Gandhi’s leadership abilities. Revealing an incident during a morning walk, Pranab expressed displeasure at Rahul’s office mistakenly scheduling a meeting, quipping about their competence in running the PMO.

The book unveils pages from Pranab Mukherjee’s diary, offering insights into his thoughts on contemporary Indian politics. As a key figure in the Congress and a former President, Pranab Mukherjee worked with three generations of the Gandhis, holding prominent ministries during Rahul Gandhi’s early political career.

Highlighting a particular incident, Sharmishtha Mukherjee writes about Rahul’s absence during the AICC’s 130th Foundation Day in 2014, following the Congress’s defeat in the general elections. Pranab Mukherjee, disappointed and questioning Rahul’s commitment, noted in his diary concerns about Rahul’s lack of charisma and political understanding, casting doubt on his ability to revive the party.

The book also mentions Pranab’s disappointment with Rahul’s “frequent disappearing acts” during crucial periods, impacting the party’s image. Despite the criticism, Sharmishtha Mukherjee acknowledges that her father would have appreciated Rahul’s recent efforts, including the Bharat Jodo Yatra, recognizing his dedication and outreach as factors that position him as a credible political figure countering bigotry.
