PM Narendra Modi To Inaugurate Kerala’s First Six-Lane Highway Stretch In Kasaragod

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Kerala’s first six-lane highway segment on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in the state’s expanding road infrastructure network.

The newly developed corridor stretches from Thalappady to Chengala in Kasaragod district, covering nearly 39 kilometres along the national highway.

The project forms part of a large-scale highway modernisation initiative implemented by the National Highways Authority of India.

Construction on the corridor commenced in November 2021 and concluded on August 25, 2025, after almost three years and nine months of work.

The stretch represents the first completed segment among 23 highway expansion projects currently underway across Kerala.

A notable feature of the project lies in its execution by the Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society, the only Kerala-based contractor participating in the state’s highway expansion programme.

The cooperative finished the work ahead of several major national contractors, earning recognition for quality and timely completion.

The cooperative received the prestigious National Highways Excellence Award 2023 from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari presented the honour in New Delhi.

The highway also features India’s longest single-pillar six-lane bridge built using advanced box-girder technology.

Environmental care marked the project as well. Workers relocated a 40-year-old mango tree and replanted 500 saplings to preserve the surrounding environment.

They also halted construction for 55 days to protect python eggs discovered at the project site.

Officials say the corridor demonstrates how modern infrastructure development can align with ecological responsibility and community welfare.
