Prime Minister Narendra Modi and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and tackling global challenges during their meeting in New Delhi.
Addressing the media in a joint statement, PM Modi underscored the shared concerns of both nations regarding terrorism, referencing past attacks in India and New Zealand.
The Prime Minister stressed that terrorism in any form is unacceptable and called for stringent action against perpetrators and separatist elements.
PM Modi stated, “We have the same opinion on terrorism. Whether it is the terror attack on Christ Church on March 15, 2019, or Mumbai 26/11, terrorism is unacceptable in every manner. Strict action is necessary against terror perpetrators. We will work together against terrorist, separatist and extremist elements. Have shared our concern regarding anti-India activities in New Zealand. We are sure we will keep getting the New Zealand government’s assistance against these illegal activities.”
The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fighting terrorism and extremism through both bilateral cooperation and global forums.
PM Modi also welcomed New Zealand’s participation in the Indo-Pacific Ocean Initiative, emphasizing shared goals for peace and stability in the region.
“We both support a free, open, secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific. Believe in the policy of development, not expansionism. We welcome New Zealand to join the Indo-Pacific Ocean Initiative,” the Prime Minister asserted.
Trade, investment, defense, and security cooperation were also key points of discussion, with both sides agreeing to deepen their partnership in these areas.
In his remarks, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon highlighted the strong and enduring ties between India and New Zealand, particularly the people-to-people connections.
Taking to X, PM Luxon posted, “New Zealand and India bookend the Indo-Pacific, but distance is no barrier to our pursuit of a brighter future for both our nations. Thank you for welcoming me to New Delhi, Prime Minister @narendramodi.
PM Luxon praised the Indian diaspora in New Zealand, calling them an integral part of the country’s multicultural fabric.
“Indian-Kiwis represent the third-largest ethnic group in the country, the largest source of skilled migrants, and the second-largest contributor to international student enrolments,” New Zealand Prime Minister remarked.
During his visit, PM Luxon engaged with business and community leaders, underscoring the importance of economic and cultural collaboration.
Highlighting the deep-rooted cultural connections between the two nations, PM Luxon also met with New Zealand cricketers Ajaz Patel and Ross Taylor.
His visit, set against a backdrop of increasing bilateral engagement, is expected to pave the way for expanded trade, investment, and diplomatic cooperation between the two Indo-Pacific nations.
