PM Modi Unveils Renovated 524-Year-Old Tripura Sundari Temple In Udaipur

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the redeveloped Mata Tripura Sundari temple in Udaipur, southern Tripura, fulfilling a long-standing public expectation.

The 524-year-old temple, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas revered by Hindus, has undergone extensive renovation under the Union Tourism Ministry’s PRASHAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive) scheme.

The project, costing over Rs 54 crore, received Rs 34.43 crore from the Central government and Rs 17.61 crore from the Tripura government.

Officials noted that the redevelopment enhances both the temple complex and its surroundings, while retaining its historical and cultural significance.

PM Modi Leads Roadshow & Offers Puja

After laying the foundation stone for 13 development projects in Arunachal Pradesh earlier in the day, the Prime Minister flew to Agartala and proceeded to Udaipur by helicopter.

He participated in a 12-km roadshow from Palatana helipad to the temple, greeted by thousands of devotees.

Upon arrival, PM Modi inaugurated the restored temple and offered prayers at the Kali temple.

He also visited an exhibition showcasing the temple’s history, local traditions, and the royal dynasty that built it.

Accompanying him were Tripura Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, Chief Minister Manik Saha, BJP state President Rajib Bhattacharjee, and other senior officials.

Built in 1501 by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya, the temple features the distinctive Bengali Ek-Ratna architectural style and sits atop a hillock resembling a tortoise’s hump, known as Kurma Pīṭha.

It houses two black stone idols of Goddess Tripura Sundari and Goddess Chandi, the latter historically carried by Tripura’s kings to battlefields.

The temple attracts over 12-15 lakh devotees annually, including visitors from neighbouring Bangladesh, with daily footfall expected to increase following the redevelopment.

The Matabari Peda, the temple’s famous sweet, recently received a Geographical Indication tag. Officials expect the project to boost local tourism, employment, and the district economy, particularly during the annual two-day Diwali Mela.
