Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday underlined the importance of state-level development in achieving national progress as he inaugurated projects worth ₹13,000 crore in Tamil Nadu and initiated highway works valued at approximately ₹3,700 crore.
Speaking at the event attended by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, PM Modi said the Union and state governments were pursuing Tamil Nadu’s development with a common purpose.
He described the occasion as a significant milestone and linked the projects to expanded employment prospects for young people.
The ceremony commenced with the national anthem before participants sang Tamil Thai Vazhthu, Tamil Nadu’s state anthem. The initiatives covered road transport, railways and port infrastructure.
Offering Navratri greetings, PM Modi referred to his prayers at the Jalakandeswarar Temple and spoke of Tamil Nadu’s spiritual significance as a land associated with Lord Shiva.
The Prime Minister also looked back on his 25 years in public life, recalling his interactions with former Tamil Nadu Chief Ministers M. Karunanidhi and J. Jayalalithaa while serving as Gujarat Chief Minister.
During his tenure at the Centre, he also worked with Jayalalithaa, Edappadi K Palaniswami and MK Stalin. He said his engagement with Chief Minister Vijay followed the same resolve to serve the state’s people.
PM Modi highlighted the growth of urban public transport, stating that Metro services had expanded from five Indian cities in 2014 to 25.
He added that the country’s Metro network had increased from 250 km to 1,100 km, widening access to convenient public transport.
The Prime Minister said sustainable development depended on comprehensive infrastructure investment, not roads alone.
He expressed hope that the newly launched initiatives would improve transport, support economic activity and accelerate the state’s progress.
He concluded that Tamil Nadu’s development would also play an important role in achieving the vision of a developed India.
