Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Jalakandeswarar Temple on the IIT Madras campus on Sunday and offered prayers in the presence of Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar and Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay.
Arlekar and Vijay accompanied the Prime Minister during the temple visit before joining the subsequent engagements at the institute.
After completing the prayers, PM Modi visited IIT Madras’s brain research centre to learn about the institute’s scientific activities. He opened the IITM Maestro Ilaiyaraaja Centre for Music Learning and Research, bringing music education and academic research into the programme alongside scientific innovation.
The campus event featured plans to inaugurate development projects across Tamil Nadu, launch new initiatives by laying their foundation stones and address attendees.
PM Modi landed at Chennai airport at 10:58 AM after travelling from New Delhi.
Governor Arlekar and Chief Minister Vijay welcomed him, joined by Ministers, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, BJP leader Nainar Nagenthran and other functionaries.
The visit was PM Modi’s first to Chennai since the Vijay government took office in Tamil Nadu.
Before heading to IIT Madras, PM Modi and Vijay inaugurated the first train service on Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase 2 network at Porur Metro station.
The Poonamallee-Vadapalani corridor was developed at a reported cost of Rs 750 crore.
Following the flag-off ceremony, the Prime Minister and Chief Minister boarded the train and travelled from Porur to Poonamallee.
PM Modi later continued to IIT Madras for the remaining events, which included the brain research centre visit, the music centre inauguration and the campus development programme.
