PM Modi To Skip UNGA Session; EAM Jaishankar Likely To Represent India

PM Narendra Modi will not address the General Debate at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), according to the revised provisional list of speakers released for the high-level session later this month.

UNGA’s 80th Anniversary Session

The 80th session of the UNGA will open on September 9, marking the UN’s 80th anniversary. The session will focus on the theme ‘Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights’.

A high-level commemorative meeting is scheduled for September 22 to celebrate the milestone.

The General Debate will take place from September 23 to 29. Brazil will open the debate, as per tradition, followed by the United States.

India, however, will now be represented by a minister instead of the Prime Minister.

Jaishankar Expected to Deliver India’s Address

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar is expected to deliver India’s address to the General Assembly on September 27.

Earlier, a provisional list issued in July had scheduled Prime Minister Modi to speak on September 26.

On September 26, the heads of government of Israel, China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh are expected to address the Assembly during the high-level debate. India’s statement will follow a day later, under Jaishankar’s representation.

The UNGA clarified that the list of speakers remains provisional and may undergo revisions as the session approaches. Such adjustments in schedules and speakers are common in the lead-up to the high-level week.
