PM Modi To Open Global Environment Conference On Climate Governance Tomorrow

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the international environment conference on September 19. The event will discuss environmental challenges and judicial approaches.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) is organising the conference in Delhi. Eminent judges and judicial representatives from 17 countries will participate in discussions on gaps in policy formulation, implementation and enforcement.

The conference will explore ways to strengthen environmental governance and institutional cooperation, according to an official statement.

Environmental experts, Supreme Court and High Court judges, district court judges, ministry secretaries, senior government officials and representatives of State Judicial Academies will attend the event.

Representatives from State Legal Services Authorities, State Expert Appraisal Committees, State Environment Impact Assessment Authorities and State Wetland Authorities will also participate.

The conference will provide a platform for exchanging judicial approaches and environmental governance practices. It will focus on critical climate challenges and mechanisms to improve institutional coordination.

Earlier, on the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, NGT Chairperson Justice (Retired) Prakash Shrivastava described clean air as a fundamental need rather than a luxury.

At the Swachh Vayu Diwas 2026 event organised by MoEFCC, Justice Shrivastava said development and environmental conservation can go hand in hand. He stressed the need to protect citizens’ quality of life.

Justice Shrivastava said air pollution crosses political boundaries. He called for source-level prevention, advanced technology and a ‘Whole of Society’ approach.

Environment Secretary Tanmay Kumar said the government is pursuing a coordinated, scientific and multi-pronged strategy to tackle air pollution in line with Prime Minister Modi’s vision.

The Environment Ministry honoured top cities and wards under NCAP. The rankings came from the fifth Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan.
