Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Tuesday inaugurate the centenary celebrations of the historic conversation between Sree Narayana Guru and Mahatma Gandhi. The dialogue, held in 1925 at Sivagiri Mutt, focused on social justice, poverty alleviation, and spiritual reform.
The event will take place at Vigyan Bhawan. PM Modi is expected to speak on a range of issues, including unity and the upliftment of marginalised communities.
The original conversation between the two leaders took place on 12 March 1925. It centred on the Vaikom Satyagraha, non-violence, religious conversions, abolition of untouchability, and poverty.
The dialogue continues to influence India’s moral and social discourse.
The Sree Narayana Dharma Sanghom Trust is organising the event. Spiritual leaders and scholars will join to reflect on the enduring values shared by the two great reformers.
“It stands as a powerful tribute to the shared vision of social justice, unity, and spiritual harmony championed by both Sree Narayana Guru and Mahatma Gandhi,” an official statement said.
The celebration aims to revive public discourse on the values of justice and equality, which both leaders upheld.
PM Modi is likely to highlight India’s progress in poverty alleviation during his address. Over the last decade, India lifted 171 million people out of extreme poverty.
The World Bank, in its Spring 2025 Poverty and Equity Brief, recognised India’s efforts. According to the report, extreme poverty fell from 16.2 per cent in 2011–12 to 2.3 per cent in 2022–23.
Officials said this achievement reflects the government’s focus on inclusive development across rural and urban areas. Through targeted welfare schemes, reforms, and expanded access to services, India made steady gains in reducing poverty.
The World Bank noted that these policies significantly improved the lives of millions and narrowed the poverty gap across the country.
