Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair three high-level commemorative committees set up to honour Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Birsa Munda, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
The three icons shaped India’s freedom struggle, tribal resistance, and modern politics.
The Ministry of Culture issued separate gazette notifications on August 23 and 25. The Centre announced year-long celebrations to mark Patel’s 150th birth anniversary, Munda’s 150th birth anniversary, and Vajpayee’s birth centenary. Thus, the move signals a coordinated national tribute.
Patel, born on October 31, 1875, became India’s first Home Minister and architect of national integration. The Statue of Unity in Gujarat already preserves his memory. Now, the new committee will plan a year of events to mark his contributions.
Meanwhile, Birsa Munda, also born in 1875, led a tribal uprising against British rule in the late 19th century. His inclusion in the commemorative committees highlights growing attention to tribal history. It also underlines efforts to showcase resistance movements often absent from mainstream accounts.
Vajpayee, whose centenary falls this year, served three terms as Prime Minister. He is remembered for economic reforms, poetic speeches, and bold nuclear tests in 1998. Moreover, his tenure from 1999 to 2004 brought stability and major projects, including the Golden Quadrilateral highways.
The commemorative committees will oversee cultural events, exhibitions, academic discussions, and outreach across India.
Although the government has not revealed the full list of members, sources said historians, scholars, and senior officials will join.
By placing PM Modi at the helm, the Centre links legacy-building with current leadership.
Consequently, the commemorations will serve both as remembrance and as instruments of national narrative shaping.
