PM Modi To Launch Maruti Suzuki’s First Global EV, e-VITARA, From Gujarat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate a landmark initiative in India’s electric mobility journey as he visits the Suzuki Motor Plant at Hansalpur, Ahmedabad, on Tuesday.

The visit will mark the launch of Maruti Suzuki’s first global battery electric vehicle (BEV), the e-VITARA, and the start of its exports to over 100 countries, including Japan and key European markets.

At the event, the Prime Minister will also inaugurate the localised production of hybrid battery electrodes at the TDS Lithium-Ion Battery plant. This facility is a joint venture between Toshiba, Denso, and Suzuki, and will now manufacture over 80 per cent of battery value domestically.

BJP confirmed the schedule, posting, “Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi will inaugurate Battery Electric Vehicle and Hybrid Battery Electrode Manufacturing on August 26, 2025, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.”

e-VITARA: From India to the World

Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, had earlier unveiled the e-VITARA at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in January 2025. Commercial production begins on Tuesday at Hansalpur, and the model will play a pivotal role in boosting India’s EV exports.

Maruti Suzuki currently operates four plants across India, with an annual capacity of 2.6 million units.

In FY25, the company exported over 3.32 lakh vehicles and sold 19.01 lakh units in the domestic market.

By making India the global production centre for its first BEV, Suzuki reinforces the country’s rising status as a hub for electric vehicle manufacturing.

Alongside the automotive milestone, Prime Minister Modi will also dedicate railway projects worth approximately ₹1,400 crore. This includes the ₹530 crore doubling of the 65 km Mahesana-Palanpur railway line, a move aimed at improving regional connectivity and freight efficiency.

The launch of Maruti Suzuki’s e-VITARA and localised electrode manufacturing is more than just an industrial achievement; it represents India’s growing capability in advanced green technologies.

These developments align with the government’s broader vision of making India a global leader in electric mobility, sustainable infrastructure, and innovation-driven growth.

With Gujarat now emerging as the launchpad for Suzuki’s global EV strategy, the event marks a decisive moment in India’s journey towards clean energy, self-reliance, and global competitiveness.
