PM Modi To Launch Key Urban Projects In Gujarat On 31 March

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Gujarat on March 31 to inaugurate and lay foundation stones for several urban development projects, highlighting the state’s two decades of rapid urbanisation and infrastructure growth.

The visit coincides with 20 years since 2005, when PM Modi, then Chief Minister, had declared it as ‘Urban Year’ to strengthen city infrastructure.

Officials said Gujarat has since witnessed significant progress in planned urban development, including expansion of roads, water supply, sewerage systems, street lighting, and green spaces.

The government, under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, has also declared 2025 as ‘Urban Development Year’ to sustain growth momentum.

Transport infrastructure has expanded through major road, rail, and air connectivity projects.

Overbridges and underbridges are under construction in cities such as Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Vadodara and Surat. The Sudarshan Setu has improved connectivity between Dwarka and Bet Dwarka.

Key expressway projects, including the Vadodara-Mumbai corridor, are progressing, alongside new greenfield corridors such as the Namo Shakti Expressway and Somnath-Dwarka Expressway.

Urban transport has received a boost with the metro rail expansion. Phase 2 of the Ahmedabad Metro now connects Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, while Surat Metro development is underway.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project is also progressing steadily.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, over 9 lakh houses have been built for the economically weaker sections.

Infrastructure upgrades under AMRUT 2.0 and the Smart City Mission have further improved civic services.

The state has also expanded airport infrastructure and upgraded several municipalities into municipal corporations, extending urban governance.

Officials said Gujarat’s transformation reflects sustained economic growth, industrial expansion, and infrastructure investment, positioning it as a key driver of urban development in India.
