Crude Oil Prices Fall As Ceasefire Hopes Ease West Asia Concerns

Global crude markets registered a notable decline on Wednesday as optimism surrounding a potential ceasefire in West Asia improved investor sentiment.

Brent Crude futures slipped by nearly 7 per cent to touch an intraday low of $97.18 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate dropped more than 6 per cent to $86.72 during early trade.

According to market specialists, the downward movement in oil prices may help ease pressure on India’s inflation and Current Account Deficit (CAD). Lower crude costs are expected to reduce the burden of imports and lend some support to the domestic currency.

They explained that a $10 per barrel change in oil prices generally influences the CAD by 0.3 to 0.5 percentage points of GDP, while also impacting consumer inflation by around 20 to 30 basis points, depending on transmission levels.

Commodity analysts observed that oil has corrected significantly after reaching recent highs.

Brent Crude, which had earlier approached $101 per barrel, has retreated considerably, easing immediate concerns regarding India’s external balances.

They noted that US crude is hovering close to an important support zone of $85–$87, indicating a cautious near-term trend.

A sustained move above $92–$94 could revive upward momentum and push prices closer to $100, while a breach below $85 may lead to further declines towards the $81–$82 range.

Market Strategy and Outlook

Despite the recent correction, experts continue to favour a ‘buy-on-dips’ strategy as long as key support levels remain intact. They warned that price fluctuations are likely to persist amid evolving geopolitical developments and broader economic factors.

The recent decline in crude prices is temporarily easing pressure on India’s inflation outlook and supporting currency stability.

At the same time, analysts cautioned that risks remain due to a wide trade deficit and elevated gold imports, which could intensify pressure if oil prices rise again or capital flows weaken.

Overnight, US equity markets closed lower, with the S&P 500 declining by 0.84 per cent and the Nasdaq Composite falling 0.37 per cent.

Meanwhile, Asian markets recorded strong gains, as Japan’s Nikkei 225 surged 3.26 per cent, South Korea’s KOSPI advanced 3.36 per cent, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index rose by 1.30 per cent.
