PM Modi To Inaugurate MS Swaminathan Centenary Conference In New Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference on Thursday at the ICAR PUSA campus in New Delhi.

This significant global event will pay tribute to Professor MS Swaminathan, the visionary scientist hailed as the architect of India’s Green Revolution, who revolutionised the country’s food production through high-yielding crop varieties.

At the opening session, PM Modi will also release a commemorative coin and stamp in honour of Prof Swaminathan’s lifelong dedication to agricultural innovation and food security.

He will also address a gathering of scientists, policy experts, and development professionals from across the globe.

Theme: Evergreen Revolution and Biohappiness

The conference, themed ‘Evergreen Revolution: The Pathway to Biohappiness’, captures Prof Swaminathan’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive farming.

Unlike the original Green Revolution, the ‘Evergreen Revolution’—a term coined by Swaminathan himself—emphasises long-term food security without harming the environment.

Key areas of discussion will include:

  • Conservation of biodiversity and natural resources
  • Sustainable agricultural practices for nutrition and food security
  • Building climate resilience in farming
  • Use of appropriate technologies for equitable livelihoods
  • Inclusive development through youth, women, and marginalised community engagement

To honour his legacy, the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) and the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) will launch the MS Swaminathan Award for Food and Peace at the conference.

Additionally, PM Modi is set to present the inaugural award to the first recipient.

This international award will recognise individuals from developing countries who have made exceptional contributions to food security, climate justice, peacebuilding, and equitable development through science, policy, or grassroots efforts.

However, by choosing to inaugurate this landmark conference, PM Modi highlights the enduring relevance of Prof Swaminathan’s work in shaping India’s agricultural future.

He is likely to underscore the need for innovation, resilience, and inclusivity in addressing today’s global food and environmental challenges.

The event stands as a powerful tribute to Swaminathan’s vision of a hunger-free, sustainable world—and signals India’s continued leadership in agricultural development rooted in science, sustainability, and social justice.
